Biography
Harriet Tubman, born into slavery in 1820. Harriet spent her first 29 years of life living on a plantation with her seven siblings, Rachel, Mariah, Soph, Henry, Moses, Linah, and Robert. When it was brought to her attention that she would soon be sold, she escaped in 1849. Her own escape wasn’t enough to please her. She decided that she was going to come back to help the rest of her family, as well as many other slaves escape. In her journey, she never lost 1 slave.
Wanted posters were posted all around, displaying her picture and a reward if she was found, dead or alive. But that didn’t stop Harriet, she kept going until she became too old and ill for the traveling conditions. Harriet died of pneumonia on March 10 of 1913 with her family and friends by her side. Her last words were “swing low, sweet chariot, comin’ for to carry me home” which was the very last song that she shared with her family members.
